Overview of Upper Dolpo Trek

Nepal’s Hidden Himalayan Sanctuary

Nestled deep within Nepal’s far-western Karnali Province, Dolpo stands as one of the most remote and enigmatic districts in the entire country. As Nepal’s tallest and largest district by area, Dolpo remains a world apart,  a place where time seems to have paused, preserving ancient Tibetan traditions and ways of life untouched by modern influences.

Separated into Lower and Upper Dolpo, the region offers a striking contrast of cultures and landscapes. Lower Dolpo is a melting pot of diverse ethnic communities living in harmony amid lush valleys and rugged hills. In contrast, Upper Dolpo is a bastion of Tibetan culture, where monasteries, spiritual practices, and centuries-old customs continue to thrive far from the reach of the outside world.

This isolation has helped Dolpo retain a rare purity. Its wilderness remains pristine, its traditions intact. Often known as Nepal’s last spiritual frontier, Dolpo’s raw beauty and profound tranquility have inspired filmmakers worldwide, including the acclaimed Oscar-nominated movie “Caravan” by Eric Valli, which captures the essence of this mystical land.

Located near the vast Tibetan Plateau, Dolpo is one of Nepal’s least explored and most protected regions. The Upper Dolpo Trek, restricted and accessible only with special permits since 1989, winds through the breathtaking landscapes of Shey Phoksundo National Park, Nepal’s largest protected area and home to the striking Shey Phoksundo Lake. This lake, famous for its intense turquoise hues, is both Nepal’s deepest and smallest, cradled by steep cliffs and untouched forests.

The natural environment here is as diverse as it is fragile. Alpine shrubs carpet the higher slopes, while expansive green meadows bloom below, offering sanctuary to elusive wildlife such as the blue sheep, Himalayan musk deer, and the rarely glimpsed snow leopard. The sound of prayer flags fluttering in the wind, the scent of juniper and pine, and the quiet footsteps on ancient trails create an atmosphere of serene other-worldliness.

The journey into Upper Dolpo begins with a flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal, the remote gateway perched at 2,500 meters. From there, the trail leads through traditional villages and terraced farmlands, ultimately reaching the sacred shores of Shey Phoksundo Lake at 3,600 meters. The trek then ascends over Kang La Pass, a high mountain corridor connecting the valleys of Phoksundo and Shey Gompa, offering panoramic views and a glimpse into the deep spirituality of the region.

For those who seek a journey beyond the ordinary, Beauty Nepal Adventure believes that anyone who has not experienced trekking in Dolpo has yet to truly understand what a lifetime of travel can offer. This trek is not just a physical expedition, but a profound immersion into one of the world’s last untouched spiritual landscapes, a transformative experience that touches the soul and expands the horizons of the heart.

Traversing Upper Dolpo is more than just a physical journey; it is a profound encounter with nature and culture, a retreat into a timeless world where ancient monasteries guard the secrets of the past, and simple mountain villages welcome travelers with warmth and quiet dignity.

After breakfast, take a short yet breathtaking flight to Juphal, the gateway to Dolpo. The flight reveals a dramatic shift from lowland plains to rugged Himalayan terrain, with Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) and Annapurna (8,091 m) rising in the distance. From Juphal, begin your trek along terraced fields and the Bheri River to reach Dunai, the district headquarters of Dolpo.
Walking: 3–4 hrs | ↑350 m.

Leave Dunai by crossing a suspension bridge and follow a gently ascending trail through pine forests and small hamlets. As you climb into the Thulo Bheri Valley, you’ll be treated to glimpses of Kagmara Peak. The path meanders through walnut groves before descending to Ankhe, a picturesque riverside settlement.

Walking: 4–5 hrs | ↑200 m.

Today is dedicated to acclimatization and the discovery of Shey Phoksundo Lake’s deep cultural and environmental significance.
Religious Significance: Locals consider the lake sacred in both Bon Po and Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Legends say that the turquoise waters hide ancient treasures and spiritual blessings, and circumambulating the lake is an act of devotion. Ringmo village hosts centuries-old monasteries where rituals are still performed to honor the spirits of the lake and surrounding mountains.
Environmental Importance: Phoksundo lies within Shey Phoksundo National Park, Nepal’s largest national park and home to rare wildlife like snow leopards, musk deer, and Himalayan blue sheep. The lake’s depth (estimated at 145 meters) makes it the deepest in Nepal, with crystal-clear water that supports unique high-altitude aquatic ecosystems.
Visual Splendor: The lake’s startling blue-green color changes with the light, set against dramatic rock walls and snow-covered ridges. Waterfalls cascade from nearby glaciers, the most famous being Nepal’s highest waterfall, plunging more than 167 meters into the valley.
In the afternoon, visit a local monastery, learn about Bon Po spiritual practices, and enjoy serene walks along the shoreline, soaking in the quiet majesty of this Himalayan jewel.
