Overview of Mustang Damodar Kunda Sacred Lake Trek
The Damodar Kunda and Muktinath Trek is one of the most spiritual and remote trekking journeys in Nepal, taking you deep into the restricted Upper Mustang region and beyond to the sacred Damodar Kunda Lake (4,890m). This trek combines adventure, cultural immersion, and profound spiritual experience, making it highly special for both trekkers and pilgrims.
The Sacred Lake – Damodar Kunda (4,890m)
Situated in the northern Himalayan belt of the Annapurna region, Damodar Kunda rests high on the windswept Tibetan plateau close to the Nepal–Tibet border. For Hindus, it is one of the most holy lakes, mentioned in the Puranas. It is believed that a pilgrimage to Damodar Kunda and a ritual bath in its icy waters will wash away all sins committed in the past and present lifetimes. The lake is also considered the main source of the Kali Gandaki River, which is sacred for its rare black fossil stones known as Shaligrams, worshipped as symbols of Lord Vishnu.
Reaching Damodar Kunda is not only a physical journey but also a deeply spiritual one. The remote and peaceful setting, surrounded by barren cliffs and Himalayan giants, offers trekkers a once-in-a-lifetime experience of stillness and devotion. Every year during the full moon of August (Janai Purnima), hundreds of pilgrims gather here to perform rituals, adding vibrancy to the otherwise isolated landscape.
The Connection with Muktinath (3,800m)
This trek also includes a pilgrimage to Muktinath, one of the most sacred temples in Nepal for both Hindus and Buddhists. Known as the “Temple of Salvation,” Muktinath symbolizes liberation from the cycle of birth and death. The site features the famous 108 water spouts, natural gas flame (Jwala Mai), and panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Many pilgrims consider visiting both Damodar Kunda and Muktinath in one journey as a fulfillment of spiritual duty.
Cultural Immersion – The Walled City of Lo-Manthang
On the way, the trek passes through several Tibetan-influenced villages and eventually reaches the legendary Lo-Manthang, the walled capital of the ancient Mustang kingdom. Lo-Manthang is famous for its centuries-old monasteries, intricately painted murals of Buddha and Bodhisattvas, and the preserved lifestyle of its people. The synthesis of Nepali and Tibetan culture, traditional mud-brick houses, and prayer-flag-lined passes make this trek culturally enriching.
Trekking Style – Off the Beaten Path with Camping
Unlike the classic Upper Mustang trek, the Damodar Kunda trail diverges into off-the-beaten paths where there are no guesthouses or lodges in some sections. For this reason, the journey is organized as a full camping trek. With Beauty Nepal Adventure, trekkers are supported by an experienced team of guides, cooks, and porters. We provide all tented accommodations, freshly cooked meals, and safe camping arrangements, ensuring both comfort and adventure in these isolated landscapes.
Trek Duration & Fitness Requirement
The Damodar Kunda and Muktinath Trek generally takes around 23 days, including sightseeing in Kathmandu and Pokhara, a scenic flight to Jomsom, and several acclimatization days. Daily trekking hours average between 5–7 hours, with gradual altitude gain to help participants adjust. Because of the high altitude (maximum at Damodar Kunda 4,890m) and challenging terrain, trekkers should have good physical fitness, mental preparedness, and previous trekking experience is highly recommended.

Day 15: Yara (3,900m) to Tangye (3,240m) – 8 hours trek
This is one of the most challenging and rewarding trekking days. We start early with a short but steep ascent, followed by a long traverse along a flat trail. Soon, the path descends sharply to Dechhyang Khola, a river that originates from Damodar Kunda. The riverbed is scattered with Saligrams—sacred black fossils of marine creatures worshipped by Hindus as symbols of Lord Vishnu. After crossing the river (approx. 30 minutes), we climb again to a high pass where we enjoy breathtaking views and stop for a packed lunch (prepared in Yara the night before, as there are no cooking facilities on this section).
The trail then undulates across a vast windswept plateau before descending into Tangye Village (3,240m), known for its striking rows of massive chortens (stupas). Overnight in tents.
Highlights: Sacred Saligrams, high-altitude plateau, Tangye’s chortens.
Meals & Accommodation: Tented camp with full board.

The route then leads us to Paha, a traditional shelter house where we stop for lunch and refill drinking water. From here, we continue along a succession of small passes for about 2 hours before reaching the top of a hill.
The descent is steep, and strong afternoon winds are common in this valley. Finally, we reach Tetang Village (3,040m), a hidden settlement between hills that offers protection from the fierce Mustang winds. On a clear day, the views of Nilgiri Himal, Dhaulagiri I, and Tukuche Peak are breathtaking. Overnight in tents.

Descending via a stream and crossing a suspension bridge, we walk through Chhyongar Village before reaching Muktinath (3,760m).
In the evening, we explore the sacred Muktinath Temple complex, an important pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. Here, devotees believe that bathing under the 108 water spouts grants liberation from the cycle of rebirth. Below the temple, we also visit a Buddhist monastery where natural gas flames emerge alongside water and earth—an incredible symbol of natural harmony.
