Overview of Lower Dolpo Trek

Tucked away nearly 300 kilometers northwest of Kathmandu, the mystical Lower Dolpo region in Dolpa District remains one of Nepal’s least explored frontiers. This extraordinary land lies within the southern reaches of Shey Phoksundo National Park, the largest national park in the country, a protected sanctuary established in 1984 to conserve the rare Trans-Himalayan ecosystem. Here, lush forests give way to wild alpine meadows, deep river valleys, and barren highland plateaus, creating a breathtaking contrast of landscapes.
Journeying through Lower Dolpo is like stepping back in time. Ancient villages such as Do-Tarap reveal centuries-old Tibetan stone houses, terraced barley fields, and vibrant monasteries echoing with the chants of Buddhist prayers. High passes like Numa-La (5,290m) and Baga-La (5,175m) challenge the body but reward the spirit with sweeping panoramas of snow-draped peaks.
The heart of this adventure is Shey Phoksundo Lake. Nepal’s second largest is a jewel of turquoise waters set beneath rugged cliffs, near the outlet of the country’s highest waterfall. Nearby, Ringmo village sits gracefully beside the lake, home to the 900-year-old Thashung Gompa, with the mighty Kanjiroba Himal standing guard over the horizon.
Lower Dolpo is not just a trek,it is an awakening. Few journeys can match its raw beauty, cultural richness, and sense of pure wilderness. As we at Beauty Nepal Adventure often say: Those who have not walked the trails of Lower Dolpo have not yet understood the soul of Himalayan adventure.
